El
Bosc Invisible

Castelló (Spain), 2025
Exhibition at Eco Les Aules

To sow is to trust in what is invisible, in what does not yet exist but may come to be. This is the idea that runs through this exhibition, where nature, memory, and creation are interwoven in a shared gesture. The works that make up The Invisible Forest propose processes: the time of the earth, the layers that are deposited, and the resilience of a system that has the capacity to leave traces and to transform itself.

The
Resistance of Light

Aarhus (Denmark), 2023
Exhibition at Enter ArtSpace

Philosopher María Zambrano, in her essay ‘Claros del Bosque’ says: there is a word, just one word which we don’t know if it has passed the barrier that separates the silence from its sound

Taking inspiration from these reflections to create  prints, drawings, projections and glass pieces, the aim is to study the opacity and transparency of significance. To play with the inherent duality of writing but to also creating a visual contradiction to generate a new perceived space.

Picturing the Invisible

London, 2022

This is the result of a practice-based investigation into how perception and reading, subconsciously change as a result of playing with conventions of book pages. ‘Picturing the Invisible’ invited the viewer to experience the ways in which artists question and unpack the forms and concepts that exist among the every day, and how the shifting boundary between what we know and don’t know can be brought to the surface for interrogation.

Against Syntax

London, 2022

Against Syntax is a multidisciplinary project that appeals to the double meaning of the word “against” which in Spanish means “en contra” but also “en contacto” and to the syntax as the way in which the elements that compose the message are combined. Through drawing, printmaking and installation, the artist proposes to explore the meanings that arise from our interaction with written language, the most intimate spaces of the communication process.

About and Contact

Altea Grau (Castelló, Spain, 1985) is an artist and researcher who lives and works in London. In 2020, she was awarded a PhD in Fine Art by Chelsea School of Art (University of the Arts London), funded by the university and the Dávalos Fletcher Foundation. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral programme at the University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury (Kent, UK), and currently combines her artistic practice with teaching Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art and Goldsmiths, University of London.

Altea Grau’s work explores the confluences between different poetic languages. Through ideas closely linked to the concept of the book—such as duality, echo, reflection, and the notion of the fold—the artist develops a distinctive discourse in which the idea of the page expands to become an extended space. Altea investigates the meanings that arise from our interaction with a language that may be visual, spatial, or material, evoking connotations and sensations associated with the dual format of her works.

Grau has received several international awards, and has been selected for exhibitions such as the Trinity Buoy Drawing Prize, Derwent Prize, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Woolwich International Print Fair. Her work has been acquired by various institutions, including the Tate Modern Special Collection, Chelsea Library Special Collection, the V&A Art Library (London), the DKV Collection, the Harold Berg Collection, the Faber Birren Collection, the Generalitat Valenciana, and the Diputació de Castelló (Spain).
